Arnold Joseph Toynbee

Toynbee, Arnold Joseph (1889–1975), English historian. His principal work, A Study of History (12 vol., 1934–61), divides the history of the world into 26 civilizations and analyzes their rises and falls according to a cycle of “challenge and response.”
