Sylvester II



Sylvester II (940–1003), first Frenchman to serve as pope (999–1003), known for his learning, his close links to the Holy Roman emperor Otto III, and his support of the Christianization of Poland and Hungary. Before being elected pope, he was superior at the monastery of Bobbio, Italy, and archbishop of Reims, France.
