Carl Burton Stokes



Stokes, Carl Burton (1927– ), mayor of Cleveland (1967–71) and first African-American mayor of a large U.S. city. He became a lawyer in 1957 and served for 3 terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. After running unsuccessfully as an Independent, he won the mayoral election as a Democrat in 1967. Stokes was reelected in 1969.
