Scarlet fever



Scarlet fever, infectious disease caused by certain strains of streptococcus. It is common in children and causes sore throat with tonsillitis, a characteristic skin rash, and mild systemic symptoms. Penicillin and symptomatic treatment are required. Scarlet fever occurs in epidemics; some infections are followed by rheumatic fever or nephritis.
