Rosario

Rosario (pop. 1,096,300), city in east-central Argentina on the Paraná River. The third largest city in the country, it developed as a shipping and processing center for the many food products from the Pampa, the fertile plains of Argentina, which Rosario borders to the east. Water and railway transportation make Rosario an important inland port city. Chemical, textile, and metal manufacturers as well as petroleum refiners are also located here. Founded in 1730, it became an important city in the 1800s when the Pampas began developing agricultural products.
