Rosas, Juan Manuel de (1793–1877), Argentine dictator, governor of Buenos Aires province (1835–52), who built up a private army of gauchos (cowboys). Bribery, force, expansionism, and continuous revolt marked his rule, which nevertheless contributed to Argentine unification.
