Patriarch

Patriarch, Old Testament title for the head of a family or tribe, especially the Israelite fathers, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob's sons. The title was adopted by the early Christian bishops of Constantinople, Rome, Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Antioch, and now extends to certain other sees, especially of the Eastern Orthodox churches. It implies jurisdiction over other bishops.
