Alan Stewart Paton



Paton, Alan Stewart (1903–88), South African writer. His novel Cry, the Beloved Country (1948), drawing on his experience as principal of a reform school for Africans, describes apartheid. In 1953 he became president of the Liberal Party, which was banned in 1968.
