Newcastle



Newcastle (pop. 428,800), city in New South Wales, southeastern Australia, on the Pacific Ocean, at the mouth of Hunter River. Coal, steel, and other industrial products are produced and transported through this port city. Newcastle was founded as a European convict settlement in 1804 and recognized as a city in 1885.
