George Bancroft

Bancroft, George (1800–91), U.S. historian and statesman. As secretary of the navy (1845–46), he helped develop the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. His 10-volume History of the United States (1834–74) became a standard work, though it was later criticized for its strong nationalistic bias.
