Hastings Kamuzu Banda

Banda, Hastings Kamuzu (1906–97), African nationalist leader, first prime minister (1964–66) and president of Malawi (from 1966–94). As leader of the Nyasaland nationalists and head of the Malawi Congress party (from 1960), he sought dissolution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Following his defeat at the 1994 presidential elections he stepped down.
