Nast, Thomas (1840–1902), German-born U.S. cartoonist, creator of the symbols for the Democratic Party (donkey) and the Republican Party (elephant). His attacks on the Tammany Hall politicial machine of New York City, symbolized as a tiger, contributed to its disintegration.
