Nairobi

Nairobi (pop. 1,162,200), capital of Kenya. A modern city on the east African plateau, it is Kenya's administrative, commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center. The city encompasses Nairobi National Park, a wildlife reserve. The city was founded in 1899, became a British colonial capital (1905) and railroad center, and then the capital of independent Kenya (1963).
