Naipaul, V(idiadhar) S(urajprasad) (1932– ), Indian writer, born in Trinidad, who has lived in England since 1950. A critic and essayist, Naipaul has been especially praised for his novels of life in the Third World, including A House for Mr. Biswas (1961), Guerrilas (1975), A Bend in the River (1979), and A Way in the World (1993).
