Muses



Muses, in Greek mythology, 9 patron goddesses of the arts, worshiped especially near Mt. Helicon. Daughters of Zeus and the titan Mnemosyne (Memory), they were attendants to Apollo, god of poetry. The chief muse was Calliope (epic poetry); the others were Clio (history), Euterpe (lyric poetry), Thalia (comedy, pastoral poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Terpsichore (choral dancing), Erato (love poetry), Polyhymnia (sacred song), and Urania (astronomy).
