Murmansk



Murmansk (pop. 472,000), city in northwestern Russia, lying on the Kola Gulf of the Barents Sea, within the Arctic Circle. An important ice-free port since 1916, it served as an Allied supply base during World War II. It is a shipping and fishing center, with lumber and shipbuilding industries, and is connected by rail with Leningrad.
