Edvard Munch

Munch, Edvard (1863–1944), Norwegian painter and printmaker. His work foreshadowed expressionism and was influential in the development of modern art. His powerful, often anguished pictures, for example, The Shriek (1893), The Kiss (1895), and Anxiety (1896) show his obsession with the themes of love, death, and loneliness.
