Guillaume Apollinaire

Apollinaire, Guillaume (Wilhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitzky; 1880–1918), influential French avant-garde poet and critic. The friend of Derain, Dufy, and Picasso, he helped to publicize Cubist and primitive art. In his lyric poems Alcools (1913) and Calligrammes (1918), he anticipated Surrealism with his use of startling associations and juxtapositions.
