Lemur, family of cat-sized primates found only on Madagascar and small islands nearby, related to primitive ancestors of the whole primate group of monkeys and apes. They are nocturnal and strictly arboreal, feeding on insects, fruit, and even small mammals. The family Lemuridae includes 2 subfamilies: the Cheirogaleinae, or mouse lemurs, and the Lemurinae, true lemurs.
