Crédit Mobilier of America, construction company instrumental in building the Union Pacific railroad in the 1860s. It became the subject of a financial scandal in 1872, when the founder, Congressman Oakes Ames, awarded himself and other shareholders contracts that produced profits of up to $23 million.
