Cornering the market, investment term for a speculator conspiracy to drive up stock prices. An investor or group of investors will buy all or most of the available shares in a company, forcing other buyers to pay higher prices for their shares and thus reaping maximum profits. The practice is now outlawed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
