Commune

government term

Commune, term for small, locally governed territorial districts in France and some other countries. The commune's government structure resembles that of a township in the United States and includes a mayor and a council. The term was originally used to designate towns in medieval western Europe that had gained self-government through rebellion, treaty, or charter.
