Communal society

Communal society, cooperative group formed on the basis of shared interests (e.g., religious or political) and emphasizing the needs of the community above those of the individual. Communal societies usually forbid private possession of land and often restrict members' contact with the rest of society. Examples of communal societies are collective farms (kibbutzim) in Israel and Hutterite groups in Montana, South Dakota, and Canada.
