Columbia



Columbia (pop. 99,300), capital and largest city of South Carolina; seat of Richland County. Columbia was purchased in 1786 by the South Carolina legislature as the site for the state capital, established there four years later. An industrial and agricultural center, Columbia produces textiles, lumber, corn, and cotton. The University of South Carolina and five other colleges are located in the city.
