Colony

Colony, area and people controlled by a foreign power. Types of colony defined by social or economic characteristics include settlement, trade, missionary, penal, and protectorate. Since World War II, the trend toward reorganization of empire has allowed many colonies to obtain independence or to be placed under the supervision of the United Nations' General Assembly or Trusteeship System.
