College entrance examination

College entrance examination, series of tests administered in the United States by 2 agencies, the College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) and the American College Testing Program (ACT), to determine eligibility for college or university admission. The CEEB gives the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in 3 sections of multiple- choice questions: verbal, mathematical, and written English; and the Achievement Tests, 14 1-hour tests measuring knowledge in specific areas such as foreign language and science. The ACT examination has 2 parts: an academic test of English, mathematics, natural science, and social studies; and a Student Profile, information about personal goals and interests. Each university or college sets its own standards for score interpretation.
