Chewing gum

Chewing gum, confection made from chicle, other resins and waxes, sugar, and corn syrup. For centuries Native American tribes chewed chicle (gum from the juice of the sapodilla tree) or spruce resin. Early European settlers adopted the habit, and chewing gum has been made commercially in the United States since the 1860s.
