Chesapeake and Ohio Canal



Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, waterway along the Potomac River between Washington, D.C., and Cumberland, Md. Planned as a route to the Midwest, it went bankrupt because of competition from the railroads. The canal became a historical park in 1961.
