Château

Château, French term for castle, often applied to any stately mansion; originally a well-fortified medieval castle with a moat, used for defense rather than residence. The 16th century château contained outbuildings and were of a more residential nature. Elegant châteaus in the Loire valley in France are Chenonceaux and Chinon.
