Charlottesville



Charlottesville (pop. 131,107), city in Virginia situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains; seat of Albemarle County. Founded in 1762, it was named after the wife of King George III. Charlottesville is the site of the University of Virginia, founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, whose home, Monticello (now a national monument), stands on a hill overlooking the city. The area's industries involve agricultural products, textiles, lumbering, and precision instruments.
