Catherine of Braganza



Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705), Portuguese wife of King Charles II of England. The marriage (1662) was intended to promote the Anglo-Portuguese alliance, but she produced no heir. After Charles's death, she returned to Portugal (1692), serving as regent (1704–5).
