Castagno, Andrea del (1423–57), Florentine painter of church frescoes, portraits, and murals. Best known for his Last Supper (1445–50) and Crucifixion (1499–50), he stressed perspective and a stark, dramatic illumination. He is notable for the vigor and strength of his figure rendering.
