Elliott Cook Carter



Carter, Elliott Cook (1908– ), U.S. composer, Pulitzer Prize winner (1960, 1973). Marked by unusual instrumentation and structure, his work is complex and highly contrapuntal, sometimes employing metric modulation, a technique he developed for creating subtle shifts in tempo. Among his best-known works are a ballet The Minotaur (1947), the Double Concerto (1961), and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (1965).
