Hattie Ophelia Wyatt Caraway



Caraway, Hattie Ophelia Wyatt (1878–1950), first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Although Caraway was appointed by the governor of Arkansas to take her husband's place in the Senate when he died in 1931, she won a special election in 1932. She served 14 years in the Senate and was the first woman to head a Senate committee and to preside over a Senate session.
