Cape Province



Cape Province, former province of South Africa, 278,465 sq mi (721,224 sq km) in area. The capital and chief city is Cape Town. A Dutch colony from 1652, the cape became British in 1806. Many Dutch settlers (Boers) migrated north and west to found independent states. Self-governing after 1872, Cape Colony joined the Union of South Africa in 1910. In the early 1990s the province was subdivided into three new provinces.
