Cape of Good Hope



Cape of Good Hope, rocky promontory near the southern tip of Africa, 30 mi (48 km) south of Cape Town, chief navigational hazard in rounding Africa. It was discovered by Bartholomeu Dias in 1488, who named it Cape of Storms. Vasco da Gama first sailed around it in 1497 into the Indian Ocean.
