Cape Cod Canal

Cape Cod Canal, sea-level channel cutting through the Cape Cod (Massachusetts) peninsula. The canal was a private commercial project built between 1909 and 1914. In 1928 it was purchased by the U.S. government and since has operated as one of the most heavily used toll-free waterways in the world. The canal, which is 17.5 miles (28 km) long, shortens the shipping route between New York and Boston by more than 75 mi (121 km).
