Callao



Callao (pop. 515,200), Peruvian seaport located 8 mi (13 km) west of the capital city of Lima. As Peru's chief seaport, most of this nation's imports and exports pass through its harbor. The city, which is part of Peru's largest metropolitan area, has survived major earthquakes, tidal waves, and foreign attacks since its founding by Spaniards (1537).
