Its name is Gaelic for “clear running water.” Founded as a Northwest Mounted Police fort in 1875, it is a center of grain and livestock marketing, located in a good farming and ranch region. Related industries are milling and meatpacking. Nearby coal, oil, and gas have resulted in a rapid expansion of the city. The city is famous for the annual Calgary Stampede, a 10-day rodeo that attracts cowboys from all over North America.
