Sarah Caldwell



Caldwell, Sarah (1924– ), U.S. conductor and opera producer. She was director of the Boston University Opera Workshop (1953–57) and founded the Opera Company in Boston (1957). As its artistic director she staged more than 50 productions noted for their originality. She was the first woman to conduct at the N.Y. Metropolitan Opera, 1976.
