Randolph Caldecott



Caldecott, Randolph (1846–86), British painter and illustrator, particularly of children's books. Among his best-known illustrations are those for Washington Irving's Old Christmas (1876) and William Cowper's The Diverting History of John Gilpin (1782). In 1938 the Caldecott Medal was established as an annual award for the best U.S. children's picture book.
