Calais



Calais (pop. 76,500), French seaport on the Pas de Calais (Strait of Dover), 170 mi (274 km) from Paris and 21 mi (34 km) from Dover. Calais is an important port, and the center of heavy passenger traffic between England and continental Europe. The city has fishing industries and textile and paper manufacturing.
