William Byrd



Byrd, William (1543–1623), English composer. His choral music includes the Great Service for the Anglican Church, Roman Catholic mass settings, and Cantiones Sacrae (1589; 1591). He also wrote keyboard music and madrigals. He was closely associated with Thomas Tallis, and in 1575 they were granted a joint monopoly for the printing and sale of music.
