Bursitis



Bursitis, inflammation of a bursa (fibrous sac containing synovial fluid that reduces friction where tendons move over bones), commonly caused by excessive wear and tear or by rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or bacteria. It causes pain and stiffness, and may require cortisone injections and, if infected, surgical drainage.
