Ambrose Everett Burnside



Burnside, Ambrose Everett (1824–81), Union general in the U.S. Civil War. Succeeding George McClellan as general of the Army of the Potomac, he resigned after the Union defeat at Fredericksburg in 1862. He was later governor of Rhode Island (1866–69) and U.S. senator (1875–81).
