Battles of Bull Run



Bull Run, Battles of, 2 clashes in the American Civil War around Manassas Junction near Bull Run Creek, 25 mi (40 km) southwest of Washington, D.C. In the First Battle of Bull Run, July 1861, Union general Irvin McDowell was sent against Confederates led by P.G.T. Beauregard, but was repulsed by them. Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson was so nicknamed for his tenacity in this battle. In the Second Battle of Bull Run, Aug. 1862, Jackson attacked Union general John Pope and forced his retreat.
