Battle of the Bulge



Bulge, Battle of the, last major western counteroffensive by the Germans in World War II. They planned to capture Liège and Antwerp, thus dividing the Allied armies. The German assault in the Ardennes began on Dec. 16, 1944, and create a huge “bulge” in the Allied lines. Although suffering about 77,000 casualties, the Allies stopped the German advance by Jan. 16, 1945.
