George Villiers Buckingham t Duke of (1s)



Buckingham, George Villiers, 1st Duke of (1592–1628), English nobleman whose influence over James I and Charles I inflamed antimonarchical feeling. He promoted costly and unsuccessful military ventures, notably the expedition to relieve the Huguenots of La Rochelle. Charles, however, shielded him from impeachment. He was eventually assassinated.
