Brunswick

Brunswick (German: Braunschweig), descendants of the Wolf family. Great Britain's present line of monarchs are descendants of Brunswick dukes of Hanover, Germany. The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg was established by Frederick II in 1235 and given to Otto, grandson of the Wolf family's founder, Henry the Lion. In 1714, Elector George Louis of Hanover succeeded to the throne of Britain as George I. A reduced duchy of Brunswick existed as a separate state and after 1735 was associated with Prussia under the House of Brunswick-Beven. Brunswick remained a constituent state of Germany from 1871 to 1946.
