Robert Browning

Browning, Robert (1812–89), English poet. He perfected the dramatic monologue in “Andrea del Sarto” and “My Last Duchess.” His masterpiece is The Ring and the Book (4 vols., 1868–69), a 17th-century Roman murder story told from different viewpoints. His psychological insight and colloquial language profoundly influenced 20th-century poets.
